The RMR Intro Series
These training sessions are held one Saturday per month and focus on
the core skills for mountain rescue. No previous knowledge or
experience is necessary. There are a total of six sessions in the
series, each starting with a 2-hour lecture on the basics of the
particular skill, followed by several hours of hands-on practice in
the field. Each session will cover everything from the "big
picture" (i.e. How does this core skill fit into a larger rescue
operation?), down to the technical details of each skill (What do I
need to know and do in order to safely participate in this aspect of
the rescue operation?). Experienced RMR members will facilitate the
small-group discussions and focused field exercises. Each of the six
sessions will be offered twice per year.
In general, the Intro Series sessions are scheduled to occur before
the regular member-focused lecture and practice on the same topic.
Prospective members who have participated in the Intro session will
get much more out of the member-focused lectures, which generally
cover advanced topics. Depending on the technical nature of the member-
focused practice, prospective members who have not participated in the
Intro session may be asked to observe rather than participate.
Prospective members are encouraged to attend each of six sessions at
least once during their prospective training period, in addition to
attending regular lectures and practices. Since the average time to
become a member is a year or more, prospectives members will have
several opportunities to participate in each Intro session.
Members are welcome to attend any or all Intro Series sessions as a
refresher, but no practice credit will be given.
